EU unsure on course of relations with Ukraine

The European Union is divided on Ukraine’s ambition to become a member, with countries such as the Netherlands and Belgium against further EU expansion, according to Radio Netherlands.

Political instability in the former Soviet republic is also seen as a harming Ukraine’s chances of EU membership.

European leaders want to decide the course of relations with Ukraine at a summit in September, but it is not clear precisely what this should be.

An easing of visa requirements is on the cards, but it is doubtful whether Ukraine will be offered the explicit prospect of eventual EU membership.
