Ukrainian official will be sued for unsubstantiated accusations

Boris Sobolev, official of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, will appear before court for publicising deliberately false information about businessman Mr. Yuri Sidorenko.

Ukrainian mass media has already written more than once that Boris Sobolev, Deputy Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, was caught on dissemination of false information. On December 22, 2008 during his briefing Sobolev stated that the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine has launched the investigation of the activity of Mr. Yuri Sidorenko, businessman and the Head of the Advisory Board of the EDAPS Consortium.

According to Sobolev, Mr. Yuri Sidorenko is said to be wanted by the secret services of Switzerland, Liechtenstein, etc. Moreover, the official stated that Mr. Sidorenko appears in a few criminal cases and has connections with secret services of other countries.

Mr. Yuri Sidorenko called this information inconsistent to the reality. Nearly five years ago the Federal Department of Justice and Police of Switzerland issued to Mr. Sidorenko, resident of this country, an extract from the register of juridical registration on having no record of convictions.

In addition, the businessman didn’t even think to hide, since during the last few months he had active public life related particularly to the work of the Ukrainian Parliament. For example, as Mr. Yuri Sidorenko informs, he participated officially in the work of the deputative group of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on interparliamentary relations with the UAE. The official documents of the Verkhovna Rada give evidences to this fact.

Mr. Yuri Sidorenko has an intention to go to law and has filed a law suit against Sobolev with the Pechersky District Court of Kyiv city to defend his honour, dignity and business reputation, and to disprove deliberately false information. The plaintiff requires disproof of false information stated by the Deputy Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine during the briefing. Also he insists on forbidding Sobolev not only to mention the plaintiff’s name in the context of the EDAPS Consortium’s activity, but to publish any information about Mr. Yuri Sidorenko in mass media as well.
